Nach einer Woche medizinischer Forschungsaktivitäten begannen die Bewohner der Internationalen Raumstation (ISS) die neue Woche mit Schwerpunkt auf  Würmern, Fruchtfliegen und Pflanzen. Die winzigen Organismen bieten Wissenschaftlern ein Modell für größere Organismen und wie Schwerelosigkeit sich auswirkt auf solche Dinge wie die Immunität, Muskeln und Knochen. Botanikforschung im Weltraum hilft Wissenschaftlern zu verstehen, wie Pflanzenzellen und Wurzeln sich entwickeln und möglicherweise zukünftige Besatzungen auf Langzeitmissionen und interplanetarischer Erforschung unterstützen. Es finden zahlreiche Pflanzenstudien statt auf der Station, die nicht nur zukünftige Weltraummissionen unterstützen, aber möglicherweise die Pflanzenproduktionstechniken auf der Erde verbessern. Die Expedition 42-Besatzungsmitglieder arbeiteten auch an Frachttransfers zum und vom kommerziellen SpaceX–Dragon–Raumfrachter sowie dem Weltraumfrachter Progress M-25M. Eine Reihe von Routinewartungsarbeiten stand auf dem Programm einschließlich hochfliegenden Sanitärarbeiten, Batteriewiederaufladungen eines Weltraumanzugs und Wissenschafts-Hardware- Installationen.

Die Einwohnerzahl der Internationalen Raumstation (ISS) beträgt sechs nachdem drei neue Besatzungsmitglieder Sonntagnacht angekommen waren. Nach einem sechsstündigen Flug, der im Kosmodrom in Baikonur/Kasachstan begann, dockte das Raumschiff Sojus TMA-15M mit Sojus–Kommandant Anton Schkaplerow (Russland/Roskosmos) und den Bordingenieuren Terry Virts und Samantha Cristoforetti am “Rasswet”-Modul und sie begannen einen 5-1/2-monatigen Aufenthalt in dem orbitalen Labor. Montag war ein Tag der Ruhe für alle sechs Expedition 42-Besatzungsmitglieder. Allerdings ging es Dienstag wieder zurück an die Arbeit, als die Mannschaft in der Station verstreut war, um Fracht vom neuen Sojus zu verlagern, Wissenschaft und Wartungsarbeiten durchzuführen. Cristoforetti, die neue ESA-Astronautin an Bord der ISS, befand sich im “Columbus”–Wissenschaftslabor und machte das europäische Physiologie-Modul fertig für bevorstehende Installationsarbeiten. Virts arbeitete innerhalb des japanischen „Kibō“-Moduls und machte einen kleinen Satelliten–Starter bereit für die Installation. Schkaplerow verbrachte Zeit mit Besatzungsorientierung und Frachtüberführung. Expedition 42-Kommandant Barry Wilmore (USA/NASA) überprüfte den neuen 3D-Drucker. Kosmonaut Alexander Samokutjajew (Russland/Roskosmos) führte Diagnosearbeiten innerhalb des “Sarja”-Moduls durch. Die erste weibliche Kosmonautin in der Station, Jelena Serowa (Russland/Roskosmos), arbeitete an verschiedenen Wartungsaufgaben im gesamten russischen Segment.

Space View:Richat-Struktur

Die Richat-Struktur (ein ringförmiges, kraterähnliches geologisches Gebilde in der Sahara im Norden von Mauretanien) ist zu sehen. Die Ringhügel liegen in der Provinz Adrar etwa 30 Kilometer nordöstlich der Kleinstadt Ouadane. Sie haben einen Durchmesser von 45 Kilometern. Die konzentrischen Ringwälle sind nur wenige Meter hoch und bestehen aus Sedimentgestein. Ursprünglich wurde die Struktur als Meteoritenkrater interpretiert, was aber wegen fehlender Impaktgesteine nicht allgemein unterstützt wird. Der Sahara-Forscher Théodore Monod veröffentlichte 1954 eine Schrift, in der er fünf derartige Krater in Mauretanien beschrieb und bei vieren einschließlich des Richat die gängige Auffassung unterstützte, es könne sich um eine vulkanische Explosion auf der Erde handeln, nur beim fünften wollte er die Einwirkung eines Meteoriten nicht ausschließen. 1969 entdeckte Robert S. Dietz Hinweise auf einen Meteoriteneinschlag. Die Entstehung dieser kreisförmigen Struktur ist nicht restlos geklärt. Da die Struktur aus dem Weltall besonders auffällig zu sehen ist, wurde sie bei Shuttle-Missionen von Astronauten zur Orientierung benutzt.
