Alle drei Vulkane befinden sich im US-Bundesstaat Washington und gehören zur Kaskadenkette, einem vulkanischen Gebirgszug, der sich entlang der Westküste Nordamerikas erstreckt und einen Teil des pazifischen Feuerrings darstellt. Mount Rainier und Mount Adams sind Schichtvulkane. Mount Rainier ist Zentrum des Mount-Rainier-Nationalparks 87 Kilometer südöstlich von Seattle in Pierce County/Washington. Mit 4.392 Metern ist er der höchste Gipfel der Kaskadenkette und des Bundesstaats Washington. Mount Adams ist nach dem Mount Rainier der zweithöchste Berg im pazifischen Nordwesten der USA. Er befindet sich im abgelegenen Wildnisgebiet des Gifford Pinchot National Forest, etwa 56 Kilometer östlich des Vulkans Mount St. Helens. Der Mount St. Helens ist ein aktiver Vulkan im Skamania County im Süden des Bundesstaats Washington mit einer Höhe von 2549 Meter. Er befindet sich etwa 90 Kilometer südwestlich Mount Rainier und rund 60 Kilometer nördlich Mount Hood. Die Entfernung nach Seattle beträgt etwa 160 Kilometer Luftlinie. Portland in Oregon ist rund 60 Kilometer Luftlinie entfernt. Der Mount St. Helens weist wie alle Vulkane des pazifischen Feuerrings eine besonders große Explosionsenergie auf. Man rechnet seine Ausbrüche zu den plinianischen Eruptionen. Der Ausbruch des Mount St. Helens vom 18. Mai 1980 ist der bis heute am besten beobachtete und untersuchte plinianische Ausbruch. Seit 1982 sind der Vulkan und sein durch den Ausbruch verwüstetes und sich langsam regenerierendes Umfeld als Naturschutzgebiet vom Typ eines National Monuments ausgewiesen. Das Gebiet wird vom United States Forest Service verwaltet.
