STS-6

STS-6 war die sechste Mission eines US–Space Shuttle und der Jungfernflug der NASA–Raumfähre „Challenger“. Der Start erfolgte am 4. April 1983 vom Kennedy Space Center in Florida, die Landung am 9. April 1983 auf dem Runway 22 der Edwards Air Force Base in Kalifornien. Die Mannschaft bestand aus Kommandant Paul Weitz, Pilot Karol Bobko und den beiden Missionsspezialisten Donald Peterson und Story Musgrave. Die Ladung bestand aus dem Satelliten TDRS-1 (Tracking and Data Relay Satellite) und einigen Experimenten. Der ursprüngliche Starttermin, der 30. Januar 1983, musste verschoben werden, weil ein Wasserstoffleck in einem der drei Haupttriebwerke (SSME) entdeckt wurde, so daß dieses Hauptriebwerk ausgewechselt werden musste. Der während STS-5 abgesagte Weltraumausstieg (EVA) der beiden Missionsspezialisten mit dem neuen Raumanzug wurde diesmal nachgeholt. Peterson und Musgrave waren insgesamt vier Stunden und zehn Minuten im All und führten die erste EVA von einem Space Shuttle durch. Außerdem war es der erste Ausstieg innerhalb des US-Raumfahrtprogramms seit neun Jahren (Skylab 4). Die wissenschaftlichen Experimente betrafen Erderkundung, Materialforschung und Navigation. Getestet wurde eine Produktionseinheit, die Anlage CFES (Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System), die bereits auf STS-4 mitflog und zur Trennung von chemischen Substanzen insbesondere von Medikamenten aus Stoffgemischen eingesetzt wurde. Mit ihr gelang die Stofftrennung 700-mal schneller als in herkömmlichen Anlagen auf der Erde und die Endprodukte lagen in vier mal größerer Reinheit vor. Mit dem MLR-Experiment (Monodisperse Latex Reactor) wurden idealgeformte Kunststoffkügelchen hergestellt, die als Medikamententräger in der Krebsforschung eingesetzt werden sollten.

Die Internationale Raumstation (ISS) hatte gestern für drei Stunden keine Verbindung mehr zur NASA-Bodenstation. Die Probleme begannen mit einem Software-Update auf Computern der ISS. Danach seien alle Verbindungen abgebrochen. Über die russische Bodenkontrolle informierten NASA-Techniker die Besatzung der ISS, daß sie den Ausweichcomputer nutzen könnten, um die Verbindung wieder herzustellen. Auch danach war diese noch lückenhaft. Nur alle 90 Minuten, beim direkten Überflug der russischen Station, habe es Kontakt gegeben.Danach wurde die Verbindung aber wieder hergestellt und der Besatzung gehe es gut, erklärte die NASA.  Derzeit sind Kevin Anthony Ford (USA/NASA), Thomas Marshburn (USA/NASA), Chris Hadfield (Kanada/CSA), Oleg Wiktorowitsch Nowizki (Russland/Roskosmos), Jewgeni Igorjewitsch Tarelkin (Russland/Roskosmos) und Roman Jurjewitsch Romanenko (Russland/Roskosmos) an Bord der ISS.
