Kjell Lindgren (USA/NASA), Oleg Kononenko (Russland/Roskosmos) und Kimiya Yui (Japan/JAXA) waren um 5:02 p.m. EDT (3:02 a.m. am 23. Juli Baikonur-Zeit) mit ihrem Raumschiff Sojus TMA-17M vom Kosmodrom  Baikonur/Kasachstan zur Internationalen Raumstation (ISS) gestartet. Die drei Astronauten schloßen sich ihren Expedition 44-Mannschaftskameraden an, als sich um 12:56 a.m. EDT (18:56 Uhr MESZ) die Luken zwischen Sojus TMA-17M und der ISS offiziell öffneten. Expedition 44-Kommandant Gennadi Padalka (Russland/Roskosmos) sowie die Bordingenieure Scott Kelly (USA/NASA) und Michail Kornijenko (Russland/Roskosmos) begrüßten die neuen Besatzungsmitglieder an Bord ihres orbitalen Zuhause. Die Besatzung wird mehrere hundert Experimente in Biologie, Biotechnologie, Physik und Geowissenschaften unterstützen – Forschung, die Auswirkungen auf das Leben auf der Erde hat. Kjell Lindgren und Kimiya Yui sind nun die 217. und 218. Personen an Bord der Internationalen Raumstation. Dies ist der erste Besuch für beide Lindgren und Yui und der dritte für Kononenko. Lindgren, Kononenko und Yui werden bis Ende Dezember an Bord der Station bleiben. Kelly und Kornijenko, die seit dem 27. März an Bord sind, werden im März 2016 zur Erde zurückkehren, wenn ihre einjährige Mission endet. Padalka, der auch seit dem 27. März an Bord ist, wird  im September zur Erde zurückkehren und lässtg Kelly als Kommandant von ISS-Expedition 45 zurück. Kelly und Kornijenko werden im März 2016 mit ISS-Expedition 46 nach 342 Tagen im Weltraum zur Erde zurückkehren.
