Nach dem Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg (1861-1865) waren die südlichen USA weiterhin meist landwirtschaftlich bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, als eine erhöhte Zuwanderung aus anderen Gebieten des Landes und die Einwanderung von außerhalb der USA zu einer erhöhten Urbanisierung führte. Die hell erleuchteten Metropolregionen von Atlanta/Georgia (Bild Mitte) und Jacksonville/Florida (Bild unten rechts) erscheinen am größten in dem Bild, mit zahlreichen anderen städtischen Gebieten, die ein zusammenhängendes Netz von Licht in der gesamten Region bilden. Eine große dunkle Region im Nordwesten von Jacksonville ist das Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Ebenso bilden die Grate der Appalachen dunkle Schwaden bis zum Norden von Atlanta und Westen von Charlotte/North Carolina (Bild Mitte). Die schwache goldene und grüne Linie von Nachthimmelsleuchten – verursacht durch Ionisation und Dissoziation von Atomen und Molekülen (vor allem Sauerstoff und Stickstoff) hoch in der Atmosphäre (über 80 Kilometer oder 50 Meilen Höhe) durch die solare Ultraviolettstrahlung – verläuft parallel zum Horizont (oder Erdrand).

Homosexuellen-Hasspredigt von North Carolina Pastor Charles L. Worley

Pastor Charles L. Worley von der Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden in North Carolina – vor seiner Gemeinde hielt er am Sonntag 13. Mai eine Hasspredigt gegen Homosexuelle. „Die Bibel ist dagegen, Gott ist dagegen, ich bin dagegen und wenn ihr vernünftige Leute seid, seid ihr auch dagegen“, so Pastor Worley. „Ich habe einen Weg gefunden, wie wir all die Lesben und Schwulen loswerden können, aber es würde nicht durch den Kongress gehen“, erklärte Worley während des Gottesdienstes. „Baut einen großen, riesigen Zaun – 100 oder 150 Meilen lang – steckt alle Lesben da rein und fliegt gelegentlich drüber, um etwas Essen fallen zu lassen. Macht dasselbe mit den Schwulen. Und setzt die Zäune unter Strom, so daß sie da nicht raus können. Und wisst ihr was, in ein paar Jahren werden sie alle aussterben, weil sie sich nicht vermehren können.“ Worley weiter: „Jemand hat mich gefragt, wen ich wählen werde. Ich sage euch was, ich werde nicht für einen Baby-Mörder und Homo-Liebhaber stimmen.“ Anlass für diese Hasspredigt war US-Präsident Barack Obamas Bekenntnis zu gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehen. Er hatte sich dafür ausgesprochen, daß Schwule und Lesben in den USA heiraten dürfen. North Carolina hatte im Mai als 30. US-Staat die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe verboten. Wähler und Wählerinnen stimmten für einen Verfassungszusatz, der die Ehe als Verbindung zwischen einem Mann und einer Frau definiert.
