Die sechsköpfige Expedition 42-Besatzung begann die Weihnachtswoche mit einem neuen Zeitplan, nachdem das US-Unternehmen SpaceX den Start seines kommerziellen DragonRaumfrachters bis zum 6. Januar verschoben hatte. Die Besatzung hätte neue wissenschaftliche Ausrüstung und Fracht von Dragon entladen, wäre der Raumfrachter am Sonntag angekommen. stattdessen wandte sich die Mannschaft laufender Forschung  und Wartung zu. Kommandant Barry Wilmore (USA/NASA) arbeitete am Binary Colloidal Alloy Test Experiment, das Wissenschaftlern helfen wird,  höherwertige Konsumgüter, die eine längere Lebensdauer haben werden, zu entwerfen. Wilmore schloss sich auch Astronaut Terry Virts an für ein Interview mit CBS Morning News und WBAL Radio in Baltimore/Maryland. Virts fuhr inzwischen fort, Vorbereitungen für die Ankunft von Dragon zu treffen, als er Ausrüstung sammelte, welche auf dem Frachter verstaut wird für eine Rückkehr zur Erde. Er packte auch Müll in das europäische Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), das im Februar abdocken wird für eine feurige Zerstörung über dem Pazifischen Ozean. Astronautin Samantha Cristoforetti verbrachte am Montag ein paar Minuten bei einem Gespräch mit Giorgio Napolitano, dem Staatspräsidenten Italiens, der eine Rede an die italienischen Streitkräfte hielt. Später sammelte Samantha  biologische Proben zum Verstauen in einem Wissenschaftsgefrierschrank und arbeitete innerhalb des Materials Science Laboratory (MSL).
