Die Abkürzung D.C. steht für den Bundesdistrikt District of Columbia, den die Stadt vollständig ausfüllt und mit dem sie heute geografisch identisch ist. Der Distrikt ist kein Bundesstaat und gehört zu keinem Bundesstaat, sondern ist dem Kongress der Vereinigten Staaten direkt unterstellt. Die Stadt ist nach George Washington, dem Oberbefehlshaber im Unabhängigkeitskrieg und ersten Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten, benannt.
