George Washington diente nicht nur als Namensgeber für die Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika er wählte auch ihre Lage, vielleicht unter Vergegenwärtigung der Transportmöglichkeiten, die der an dem Standort vorbeifließende Potomac River bieten würde. Von Anfang an sah die Stadt Konflikte; im Britisch-Amerikanischen Krieg von 1812 fielen britische Truppen ein und brannten mehrere öffentliche Gebäude nieder. Der US-Bürgerkrieg markierte den Beginn der Transformation der Stadt von einer Provinzstadt zu einem Welt-Zentrum der Kultur, Geschichte und politischen Energie während des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach Angaben des United States Census Bureau unterstützte der District of Columbia, der die Stadt Washington umfasst, eine Bevölkerung von mehr als einer halben Million Einwohner im Jahr 2003. Dieses Bild wurde aufgenommen, als die Internationale Raumstation (ISS) über die westliche Grenze von Maryland und West Virginia flog. Die Auflösung und räumliche Abdeckung dieses Bildes sind ähnlich wie die 15 Meter pro Pixel Daten, die erhalten werden durch Sensoren an Bord der Landsat-7 und TerraSatelliten. Erkennbar in diesem Bild sind das Kapitol, das Washington Monument (und sein Schatten) und das Lincoln Memorial, entlang des nordöstlichen Ufer des Potomac River.
