Bild via Astronaut Chris Hadfield (Kanada/CSA) auf Twitter (@Cmdr_Hadfield). Panama-Stadt (ist die Hauptstadt und der Regierungssitz des mittelamerikanischen Staates Panama und mit über 880.000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt des Landes) ist zu sehen. Sie liegt im Süden des Landes in der Provinz Panamá an der pazifischen Küste und direkt östlich des Panamakanals. Die moderne Stadt ist das wirtschaftliche, politische, touristische und kulturelle Zentrum des Landes. Der Panamakanal ist eine künstliche, etwa 82 Kilometer lange Wasserstraße, die die Landenge von Panama in Mittelamerika durchschneidet, den Atlantik mit dem Pazifik für die Schifffahrt verbindet und ihr damit die Fahrt um das Kap Hoorn an der Südspitze Südamerikas erspart. Der 1914 eröffnete Kanal ist eine der wichtigsten Wasserstraßen der Welt.
