Mount Hood befindet sich innerhalb der Kaskadenkette der westlichen Vereinigten Staaten und er ist der höchste Gipfel in Oregon (3.426 Meter oder 11.240 Fuß). Die Kaskadenkette ist gekennzeichnet durch eine Linie von Vulkanen verbunden mit einer Platte aus ozeanischer Kruste, die abtaucht oder absteigt unter die sich westwärts bewegende kontinentale Erdkruste von Nordamerika. Durch den SubduktionsProzess generiertes Magma steigt nach oben durch die Kruste und speist eine Linie von aktiven Vulkanen, die sich von Nordkalifornien in den USA bis zum südlichen British Columbia in Kanada erstrecken. Während heiße Quellen und Dampflöcher auf dem Mount Hood immer noch aktiv sind, fand der letzte Ausbruch des Vulkans im Jahr 1866 statt. Der Vulkan gilt als ruhend, wird aber immer noch aktiv überwacht. Getrennte Phasen von Eruptionen erzeugten pyroklastische Ströme und Lahare, die Eruptionsstoffe in allen großen Flüßen, die den Vulkan Entwässern, hinunter transportierten. Graue vulkanische Ablagerungen erstrecken sich südwärts entlang der Ufer des White River (Bild unten links) und bilden mehrere prominente Bergrücken entlang der Südost- bis Südwest-Flanken des Vulkans. Die Ablagerungen sind in starkem Kontrast zu dem Grün der Vegetation auf den unteren Flanken des Vulkans. Der Mount Hood Stratovulkaneine typisch kegelförmige Struktur, die durch geschichtete Lavaströme und explosive Eruptions- Ablagerungen gebildet werden – beherbergt zwölf kartierte Gletscher entlang seiner oberen Flanken. Wie andere Gletscher im Pazifischen Nordwesten sind die Hood-Gletscher aufgrund der globalen Erwärmung zurückgewichen und sie haben im letzten Jahrhundert geschätzte 61 Prozent ihres Volumens verloren. Der vorhergesagte Verlust von Gletscherschmelzwasser unter den künftigen Erwärmungs-Szenarien wird erhebliche Auswirkungen auf die regionale Hydrologie und Wasserversorgung haben.
