Diese markante Bild der südwestlichen Küste von Saudi-Arabien wurde von einem Astronauten an Bord der Internationalen Raumstation (ISS) aufgenommen. Neben den Stadtlichtern verdeckt und verwischt eine lückenhafte Wolkendecke teilweise die Lichter der Städte, insbesondere in der Nähe von Chamis Muschait und Abha. Während ein Großteil des Landes dünn besiedelte Wüste ist – und in der Nacht relativ dunkel aus Mangel an Stadt- und Fahrbahnlichtern – hat die südwestliche Küstenregion mehr gemäßigtes Klima und mehrere große Städte. Drei hell erleuchtete Stadtzentren sind im Bild links oben sichtbar; Dschidda, Mekka und aṭ-Ṭā’if. Dschidda ist das Tor für islamische Pilger auf dem Weg ins nahe Mekka (eine religiöse Wallfahrt bekannt als Haddsch). Aṭ-Ṭā’if im Osten befindet sich an den Hängen der Sarawat Mountains, und bietet eine Sommerresidenz für die saudische Regierung vor der Wüstenhitze in der Hauptstadt Riad. Hell gelb-orange Beleuchtung markiert Autobahnen, die der Richtung der Asir Mountains in der Bildmitte gleichen und Mekka mit den Ferien-Städten al-Bahah und Abha (Bild unten rechts) verbinden. Kleinere Straßen, mit blauer Beleuchtung, erstrecken sich im Westen zu kleinen Städten entlang der Küstenlinie des Roten Meeres. Das helle gelb-orange Leuchten der Stadt Abha ist übereinstimmend mit dem der Stadt Chamis Muschait (oder Khamis Mushayt) im Nordosten. Das hell erleuchtete Band der Autobahn setzt sich fort vorwärts in die Richtung anderer großer Städte im Süden (Jazan, nicht zu sehen) und Südosten (Nadschran, nicht zu sehen).

Dschidda liegt am Roten Meer und bildet das Tor nach Mekka, dem religiösen Zentrum des Islam, welches etwa 72 Kilometer östlich im Landesinneren gelegen ist.
