Auf dem Bild ist der Crater Lake (ein Kratersee des Vulkans Mount Mazama im Süden des USBundesstaates Oregon). Der Crater Lake ist das Hauptmerkmal des Crater-Lake-Nationalparks. Der See entstand durch die Füllung der Caldera mit Regenwasser. Die Wassermenge tauscht sich etwa alle 250 Jahre aus. Die bisher letzte Eruption fand vor etwa 7700 Jahren statt. Das grüne leuchten am Himmel ist Nachthimmelsleuchten (Airglow – ein schwaches Leuchten höherer Atmosphärenschichten) und der helle Bogen über dem Bild ist das Zentralband der Milchstraße, im Durchschnitt viel weiter entfernt, als die nahe gelegenen Sterne und meist durch Schwerkraft geformt.
