André Kuipers war als Mitglieder der ISS-Expedition 30/ISS-Expedition 31 von Dezember 2011 bis Anfang Juli 2012 an Bord der Internationalen Raumstation (ISS). Der Lake Powell (ist nach dem Lake Mead der zweitgrößte Stausee der USA und liegt rund 350 Kilometer nordöstlich von Las Vegas im Grenzgebiet von Utah und Arizona),  das Monument Valley (ist eine Ebene auf dem Colorado Plateau an der südlichen Grenze des US-Bundesstaates Utah zu Arizona), Las Vegas (ist die größte Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Nevada) und der Colorado River sind zu sehen. Das Monument Valley liegt innerhalb der Navajo-Nation-Reservation in der Nähe der Ortschaft Mexican Hat in Utah, wird von den Navajo verwaltet und ist daher kein staatliches Schutzgebiet wie das nahegelegene Navajo National Monument. Es ist bekannt für seine Tafelberge und diente bereits vielfach als Kulisse für Dreharbeiten. Der Colorado River ist der größte und wichtigste Fluss im Südwesten von Nordamerika. Er ist 2333 Kiloimeter lang und entspringt im Rocky-Mountain-Nationalpark im US-Bundesstaat Colorado, nordwestlich von Denver auf der Westflanke der Nordamerikanischen Kontinentalen Wasserscheide. Er fließt von den Bergen der Rocky Mountains nach nach Utah und Arizona und bildet größtenteils die Grenze zwischen Arizona und Nevada sowie die komplette Grenze zwischen Arizona und Kalifornien. Danach fließt der Colorado nach Mexiko und mündet zwischen den Bundesstaaten Baja California und Sonora in den Golf von Kalifornien.
