Bild via Astronaut Chris Hadfield (Kanada/CSA) auf Twitter (@Cmdr_Hadfield). Der Aralsee (ist ein abflussloser, mittlerweile wegen Austrocknung in mehrere Teile zerfallener Salzsee in Zentralasien) ist zu sehen. Es bestehen vor allem noch der ehemalige Nordteil und der westliche Rest des ehemaligen Südteils. Die seit etwa 1960 zunehmende Austrocknung des Sees stellt weltweit eine der größten vom Menschen verursachten Umweltkatastrophen dar. Mit ursprünglich rund 68.000 Quadratkilometern Ausdehnung war der Aralsee früher der viertgrößte Binnensee der Erde. Die Reste des einstigen Aralsees liegen innerhalb der Aralo-Kaspischen Senke in einem Becken, dem Tiefland von Turan. Er gehört teils zu Kasachstan, teils zu Usbekistan. Aufgrund des kontinentalen Klimas herrschen Halbwüsten- und Wüstenklimate vor.
